Welcome everyone! This is the start of my new blog focusing on teaching literacy across all grade levels and subject areas. I will be posting useful tips for teaching literacy, along with articles, projects, and lessons. I look forward to sharing with other educators some of the knowledge I discover on a daily basis.
My first tip for educators is to check out this months edition of the English Journal. This months focus is on interdisciplinary collaboration. You can access the English Journal at www.ncte.org.
One particular article that stood out in this months issue is "What the Hunger Games Can Teach Us about Disciplinary Literacy" by Jane M. Saunders. This article focuses on how Saunders uses the Hunger Games with pre-service teachers to get them to create literacy lessons within their respected disciplines. The chart below shows some of the ideas her students listed.
